What if all grocery stores ditched self-checkout at once?
Our local Safeway in Denver removed 6 self-checkout lanes last month and added 4 cashier lines. The line moved faster, but maybe that's just because people actually talk to each other now. Has anyone else seen a store do this and actually stick with it for more than a few weeks?
There's a labor angle here nobody mentions. Cashiers at my Kroger told me they actually prefer it because self-checkout meant one person watching 6 machines and getting yelled at when they broke. Now they just ring people up.
