I was at a coffee shop in Seattle and the free Wi-Fi login asked for my birthdate and zip code just to get online.
It made me wonder how many places quietly collect that kind of personal data without us really thinking about it, and what they're doing with it all.

That bit about "quietly collecting data" is exactly it. I used to just click through those login screens without a second thought. Now I see they're building a profile on you, probably to sell to data brokers or target ads. It's why I use a burner email for that stuff now.

I use SimpleLogin for my burner emails, it forwards everything to my main inbox.

Oh man, the burner email is smart. I'm over here with a single email address from 2007 that's basically a public library of my entire digital life. I get ads for cat food because I signed up for a pottery class newsletter one time. The data brokers probably have a folder on me labeled "easily confused.
