My coworker said I was paranoid for using a VPN at home, then our company got hacked last month

He told me I was wasting $5 a month on Mullvad until the ransomware hit our server, and now he asks me what other setup I run, does anyone here actually run a full Pi-hole network at home?

2400 bucks for a Unifi rack and a fanless mini PC just to block ads on a TV? I mean, @drew965 makes a good point about the smart TV thing but honestly most people are overcomplicating this stuff. 15% blocked traffic sounds nice but what percentage of that is actually malicious versus just annoying tracking pixels? I run Wireguard on my router and call it done. Pi-hole is great for nerds who want graphs but for the average person its a solution looking for a problem. Your coworker should be asking why the company got hacked in the first place not copying your whole setup.

My buddy runs Pi-hole at his place and the thing blocks like 15% of his dns traffic easy. But here's the part nobody brings up: if you're the only one on your network using VPN all the time, the Pi-hole might not catch stuff from your work laptop OR your phone when it's off wifi. I actually had to set up a SECOND Pi-hole just for my guest network because my smart TV kept phoning home to China even with the main one running. That coworker of yours is probably gonna ask you to build him a whole rack now.
