Overheard my neighbor's kid tell his friend 'my dad says Alexa is always listening' and it hit me how different things are from when I grew up

Back in the 90s the only thing listening in on us was a nosy babysitter, not a device that's probably selling my shopping list to ad companies, has anyone else just stopped talking near their smart speaker?

Actually I traded in my old phone for a newer model last month and now I pretty much have to talk to the thing to set timers and check the weather... it's actually kind of convenient when you're in the middle of cooking or whatever. The targeted ads I get are usually for stuff I actually need so I don't really mind if Siri or whatever is logging my late night pizza cravings. My cousin works in tech sales and he told me these companies already have way more data on us from our phones and credit cards than a little speaker could ever collect.
