Spent $300 on a 'privacy' router and I'm not sure it did anything

I bought this thing called a Gl.iNet router six months ago because the ads said it would stop my ISP from seeing everything I do. It was a pain to set up, and I had to mess with VPN settings for hours. My internet got slower, and I still got ads for things I looked up on my phone. Honestly, it feels like I just paid a lot for a fancy box that makes my Wi-Fi worse. Has anyone actually had a good experience with one of these, or is it mostly hype?

Ugh, I read a whole thing about how those mostly just hide your traffic from your ISP, not from the sites themselves. The ads probably come from Google or Facebook tracking you.

Actually VPNs do hide your IP from the sites you visit, not just your ISP.
