Great date turned nightmare when my ex showed up at the same restaurant

Last Saturday in Portland I finally had a date with this guy Mark who was funny and normal for once, then my ex walked in with his new girlfriend and sat two tables away. Instead of ignoring it I made a stupid joke about it that totally fell flat and the third hour turned into us rehashing my breakup story. He tried to save it by suggesting we get dessert somewhere else but I couldn't stop glancing over, and now I'm wondering if honesty about baggage is actually overrated or if I just blew a good thing. Has anyone else had a date ruined by an ex sighting, or am I the only one who can't just let that go?

Maybe the real issue is he didn't grab your hand and walk out the door.
