My $80 dinner date where he spent the whole time on his phone
I drove 45 minutes to meet this guy at a nice Italian place downtown, and he literally scrolled through Instagram during the main course. Not even a 'sorry, just checking something' - just complete silence while I ate my fettuccine alone. Has anyone else had a date who couldn't put their phone down for one hour?

Read an article somewhere that said 90% of people think constant phone checking in public is rude, but almost nobody actually calls it out. This guy clearly missed that memo. My rule of thumb is if the phone comes out for anything other than a quick check, the date is pretty much over at that point. You put in the effort to drive 45 minutes, he couldn't put in the bare minimum of eye contact.

Last week at the grocery store I saw a mom scroll through TikTok while her kid tried to show her a drawing like 4 times. People just forget how to be present anywhere now. Cafes, checkout lines, even at crosswalks I see people staring down at their phones instead of looking where theyre going. Its like we all agreed to stop acknowledging the real world exists around us. That guy at dinner was just doing what everyone else does but in the worst possible setting.

almost nobody actually calls it out" - yep, that's the real problem. I wish someone had just walked up and said "hey, put your phone down.
