Overheard a couple at the next table debating who should pay, and it made me think

He said 'real men always cover the bill,' which is such an OLD idea. My takeaway is that insisting on paying can actually be MORE awkward, like when my date last spring got visibly upset I offered to split it. Does anyone else think the 'who pays' rule needs an update?

Why does it have to be a rule at all? Just talk about it like two adults, maybe before you even go out.

My last "adult conversation" about splitting the bill ended with me Venmo requesting for half a basket of bread. Maybe a loose rule would save my dignity.

Exactly, just have the conversation early. Like if you're planning a trip, you'd talk about splitting costs before booking anything. Same idea here. It's way less awkward to say "hey, how do you usually handle dates" over text before meeting up. That way no one's put on the spot at the table.
