Overheard a girl telling her friend she 'always brings a friend' to first dates just in case

I was at a coffee shop near Portland last Tuesday and caught this girl saying she always brings a backup friend to sit at another table during first dates. She said it's so she has an excuse to bail if the guy is boring or weird. Is this a common thing people actually do or did I just witness some next level paranoia?

Did she say how often she actually bails on the guy? I'm trying to figure out if this is a CYA move or if she's just setting up a guaranteed escape route every single time. Like, if you're THAT scared of a bad date, maybe don't agree to the date in the first place? It feels like she's wasting her friend's time too, sitting at another table watching her pick at a muffin for an hour.

@xena373 I've actually been the backup friend for this twice and honestly it's not that bad because we usually just catch up on our own if the date goes well haha. The trick is you gotta be upfront with your friend that you might be ditching them if the guy turns out to be cool. It's less about paranoia and more about having a safety net so you don't feel trapped for two hours with someone giving off weird vibes.
