Picked a fancy steakhouse over a casual burger joint for a first date last month
I figured spending extra would impress her, but the place was so quiet and stiff we barely talked for 90 minutes. Has anyone else had better luck keeping it low key instead of going all out?

Oh man, that's the whole trap right there. I've been on both sides of that table and the fancy places just feel like you're in a museum not a date. You're too scared to spill your drink on the white tablecloth or laugh too loud cause it echoes off the stone walls. I went to a dim sum spot once where we were elbow deep in napkins and sauce and we ended up talking about our weirdest family recipes for an hour. Low key lets you be real without that pressure to impress.

100 percent yes. My wife and I went to this tapas place in our city that was all mood lighting and tiny plates. I spent half the night wondering if I was supposed to eat that olive with my hands or just stare at it. Then last summer we grabbed pupusas from a hole in the wall and sat on a curb eating them out of foil. We ended up arguing about whether pineapple belongs on pizza for like twenty minutes, laughing so hard I almost choked on curtido. That's the stuff that sticks with you, not the fancy napkin folding. Have you found a spot since then that just clicked, no pretending needed?
