That time I took a date to a drive-in movie and the car battery died during the previews

This was maybe 5 or 6 years ago, out at the Sky-Vu Drive-In near my town. We get there early, grab snacks, set up the blankets in the truck bed. I figure we can run the radio for a while before the movie starts. But I forgot I left the dome light on or something, because 20 minutes in, the engine won't turn over. No jump starter with me, no other cars nearby we knew. We sat there in silence for like 10 minutes, then she asked if I wanted to just go get ice cream instead. We ended up at a Dairy Queen down the road, and it was actually a better night than the movie would've been. Has anyone else had a date that went bad but then turned around like that?

Man, that's the kind of thing that sounds like a disaster but turns into a good story. Did you two ever actually get to a drive-in after that, or did that first try kinda ruin the whole drive-in experience for you? I'm curious if the DQ night turned into a running joke between you two or something.

Nah, you're looking at it wrong actually. That first night being a total bust is what made the drive-in thing work. We finally made it to one like two weeks later and it was fine, decent movie, okay popcorn, nothing special. But the DQ disaster is the part we still laugh about. We still bring it up randomly, like if one of us gets lost on the way somewhere we'll text the other "turning around, trying the DQ instead". The actual drive-in was just a regular night out, the messed up one is the memory that stuck. Sometimes the good stories come from the plans that fall apart, not the ones that go smooth.

Oh man, this reminds me of what happened to my buddy Tom. He took this girl he was crazy about to a fancy dinner downtown, parked in one of those valet lots, and when they came back two hours later the valet had lost his keys. Just straight up misplaced them somewhere in a parking garage full of like 300 cars. They stood around for 45 minutes while the guy kept saying "sorry sir, we're looking." Tom was about to lose it but the girl just laughed and said let's walk to that dive bar around the corner. They ended up staying there til close playing pool and cheap jukebox songs, and now they're married with a kid. The valet never did find those keys, he had to get a new set made the next day.
