I was wrong about tuning boxes, a dyno day changed my mind on Friday
For like 2 years I kept telling everyone a tuning box was just a waste of money compared to a real custom tune. My buddy Dave kept saying the opposite, that for my setup a good box was all I needed. I finally went with him to a dyno day at a place outside Tulsa last Friday. We strapped my truck down and the box gained 43 hp and 80 ft-lbs over my stock tune. I was so sure it would show nothing. I still think a custom tune is better for max power, but for a daily driver that I tow with, the box is honestly fine and way cheaper. Has anyone else had a dyno result that made you flip your opinion on something?

Wait, did you actually see gains like that from just a box and no other changes?
Thats wild honestly. I mean, Ive always been the guy saying boxes are snake oil for anyone who cares about real power. But 43 hp and 80 ft-lbs on a stock tune isnt nothing, thats a solid bump for towing and daily driving. Maybe Ive been too stuck on the idea that only a custom tune can give you good numbers. The price difference is huge too, boxes are way easier to swap back for warranty. I still think a custom tune will squeeze out more on the top end, but for 90% of people a box might just be the smarter buy. Kinda makes me want to try one on my own rig just to see.
