My uncle called me out for using the wrong knife at Thanksgiving

I was hacking at the turkey with a chef's knife and he just handed me a carving set from the drawer. He pointed out I'd been mangling the meat for 20 years instead of slicing it clean. Has anyone else had a relative totally humiliate their kitchen technique during a holiday meal?

Wait, did anyone actually teach you how to use a carving set before that? My grandma handed me a boning knife once and just said "the bird needs a little surgery" with zero explanation. I spent years thinking you had to hack through everything until my cousin showed me you can actually follow the seams of the meat. Feels like half the time relatives are just waiting to drop a lesson on you when you're mid bite.

Oh man that surgery line is hilarious though. My dad once handed me a pair of kitchen shears and said "just go for it" when I asked him how to break down a whole chicken. I ended up cutting the bird into like ten weird pieces because I thought you had to separate every single little joint. Turns out you can just snap the thighs off with your hands if you bend them backward. Nobody tells you these things until you're already making a mess.
