My uncle still uses the wrong map scale for hiking trips
Every year at Thanksgiving dinner my uncle pulls out his old paper topo maps and argues with my cousin about trail distances. He claims a 5 mile loop is actually 8 miles because he's using the wrong scale from a 1987 USGS map. I checked the same trail on my GPS last summer and it matched the modern digital map exactly at 4.9 miles. Has anyone else had to deal with someone refusing to update their navigation method?

Told my dad his compass was off by hiding a geocache he had to navigate to.

Worked with a guy who used to do that same kind of thing to his old man. I'd say take it slow and let him find his own way back. He'll come around eventually, just don't push too hard.

1987 was the year my uncle got his first GPS and he still insists on using the "classic" method with a compass that's been dropped in a river twice lol. That 3 mile discrepancy would drive me nuts though, especially if he's arguing about it at dinner instead of just enjoying the hike. My cousin once hid a candy bar at the end of a "shortcut" my dad swore was faster just to prove it was 2 miles extra. Sometimes you gotta let them figure it out the hard way or just nod and bring extra snacks for the longer route they'll inevitably take.
