That stat about tipping at restaurants really threw me off
I was looking into tipping culture after a big blow up at Thanksgiving over my cousin not tipping enough on a $200 tab. Found out from a Cornell study that tipping actually started in the US post-Civil War as a way to not pay Black workers a fair wage. My uncle went ballistic saying it's just about rewarding good service now, but my aunt was saying we should just pay servers $15 an hour and end the whole system. What side of the table does your family fall on when this comes up?

That $200 tab thing is bonkers to me. I had no idea tipping started as basically a way to avoid paying Black workers after the Civil War, I read a similar breakdown from that Cornell study and it made me sick to my stomach honestly. My family is split too, my dad is on your uncle's side yelling about "service industry tradition" while my mom just brings up how waitresses at Cracker Barrel make like $2.13 an hour and it makes everyone uncomfortable.
