Unpopular opinion: the fancy organic dish soap is a total waste of money
I spent $18 on a bottle of that 'plant-based' dish soap from the natural foods store last month because I wanted to be eco-friendly. After two weeks, I had to use twice as much to cut through grease on a single baking sheet compared to my usual Dawn. The smell was nice, sure, but I burned through the whole bottle in like 12 days. Has anyone else tried those expensive brands and regretted it, or am I just using them wrong?

kevin's comment about his dad using Fels-Naptha made me laugh, but come on. Is a bottle of dish soap really that big of a deal? You spent eighteen bucks once, learned your lesson, and now you know not to do it again. It doesn't have to be some whole forum debate about the "old ways" versus new stuff. It's soap. It washes dishes. If Dawn works for you, just buy Dawn. Nobody is judging you for not using artisan dish soap. The whole "my dad would laugh" thing is kind of funny though, because honestly your dad probably would have also wondered why you're on a forum about dish soap in the first place.

My wife bought that same stuff once and I swear she made it last three weeks by using half a bottle per load. The whole time I'm thinking about my dad who used to wash everything with a bar of Fels-Naptha and a stiff brush. He'd have laughed at us paying eighteen dollars for dish soap that smells like a farmers market. I wound up buying a big jug of the regular stuff from the grocery store and just keeping it under the sink. Sometimes the old ways are the cheap ways.

That's a fair point about the "old ways" thing, but I gotta ask-did your wife end up agreeing with you about switching back to regular soap, or is she still buying the fancy stuff behind your back? In my experience, that kind of thing can turn into a whole conversation about who does the shopping and what matters to each person. Just wondering if it was a one-time thing or if it created a household rule about soap.
