Found out my ex changed the locks but I'm still liable for the HOA fees

I was going through old mail and saw a delinquent HOA notice from the Pine Meadows association in my name, even though I left the house 6 months ago. Turns out in our state, if you're still on the deed you're on the hook for fees until the divorce decree is filed with the county. Has anyone else gotten stuck with a bill like this after moving out?

Yeah that's a real mess. Gotta get that deed sorted ASAP or it'll keep costing you.

Did your lawyer mention there was a way to force a partition sale to get your name off the deed before all this went south?

Honestly I used to think partition sales were just a last resort for people who couldn't work things out, but seeing how this went down totally changed my mind lol. Like, you'd think getting your name off a deed would be simple after things go bad, but it's way more complicated than I ever realized. My cousin had a similar situation and she kept waiting for her ex to just sign off, ended up costing her like two years of stress and lawyer fees. Now I'm all for forcing that sale early if you can, way better than being stuck in limbo forever. Really opened my eyes to how important it is to protect yourself on paper from the jump.
