Kept the house in the divorce and now I'm drowning in repairs

I got the house in the settlement last year in Portland, but I had to choose between keeping it or taking a cash payout. I picked the house thinking I could handle the maintenance, but it's already cost me $4,000 in plumbing and roof fixes. Has anyone else regretted keeping a big asset just because it felt like the right move emotionally?

$4,000 doesn't sound like drowning to me, honestly.

Add on that $4k is just one payment though. People forget that's due every single month for years after buying. For most folks, $4k a month is more than their entire paycheck, especially with rents and grocery prices the way they are now. You're talking almost $50k a year just to keep the car, before you even put gas in it or pay insurance.

Vera, you gotta look at that number in context though. I was at the grocery store yesterday and a bag of apples was like $8. Normal people are skipping meals to afford rent, and you're saying $4k a month for a car doesn't sound bad? lol. It's not just the payment either, it's the whole deal - dealers add markups, interest rates are insane right now, and then you have to feed it premium gas. Most people I know are bringing home maybe $3k-3.5k a month after taxes if they're lucky, so yeah, that payment alone would eat more than their whole check. It's like people forgot what normal money looks like.
