Looking back at my old wedding photos from 2019 in Chicago

Honestly, three years ago I couldn't even look at them. I had the whole album in a box under my bed. Last month, I finally pulled it out and just stared at the pictures for a while. It didn't hurt like it used to. Then last week, my kid asked to see them, and I sat on the floor and showed her. I told her that was a happy day, and that's still true, even if things changed. It felt weird but okay. Has anyone else gotten to a point where you can look at that stuff without feeling sick?

Yeah, the part about telling your kid it was a happy day... that got me. I used to think you had to pretend the whole thing never happened to move on. But you're right, it can still be true. It's just a different kind of true now.

Exactly, like you can't just delete a whole day from the family story, @danielb43. It's more like you're editing the caption from "best day ever" to "complicated day that had some good cake." The truth gets an update, not a full rewrite.

That part about "a different kind of true now" really sticks with me. How do you even start to explain that new truth to yourself before you can tell a kid about it?
