The county clerk in Phoenix told me something that saved me $600 in filing fees

I was standing in line at the Maricopa County courthouse ready to pay $350 for the divorce filing when the guy behind the counter whispered that I could file it as 'joint' instead of 'contested' because my ex already signed everything, and that one word choice knocked it down to $89, has anyone else had a clerk give them a money-saving tip like that?

The clerk saving you money is cool and all, but $89 still feels like a lot for a piece of paper saying you're done.

Clerks are sitting on a goldmine of insider knowledge that could save people hundreds, but they're not allowed to just advertise it. It's like when you go to the hardware store and the old guy at the counter tells you not to buy the expensive brand of PVC glue because the generic stuff works exactly the same. Or when you get your car inspected and the mechanic whispers that you can skip that emissions test for another year if you just pay the late fee instead. People in those roles see the same mistakes and overpayments every single day, they just don't have a sign that says "ask me how to bend the rules.
