A quick note on mixing paint for old trim

I keep seeing folks at the store just grab a gallon of off-white for their 1920s trim and call it a day. That's a fast way to make your house look flat. The original paint had different sheens for different parts. I learned this the hard way after repainting my front room. The trim looked wrong until I used a semi-gloss on the main pieces and a satin on the flat panels. It took three tries to get it right. Has anyone else found a good guide for matching historic paint finishes?

Three tries sounds like a nightmare, honestly.

Oh man, it's not that bad, @derekward. A good paint store can usually help you figure out the right sheens in one go if you ask.
