Rant: I swore by using a regular drill for mixing joint compound until last month

I mean, I'd always just used my old DeWalt drill with a paint mixer attachment for small drywall patches, but then I had to do a whole ceiling in my living room. My buddy lent me his mud mixer that hooks to a drill, and it cut the mixing time down from like 15 minutes to maybe 2, with way fewer air bubbles. Anyone have a good brand for a dedicated mixing drill that won't burn out?

Remember when we all used cordless drills for everything? After seeing hayden709's comment about the smoking drill, I finally got why my old one smelled like hot plastic last summer. Some jobs just need the right tool, even if it feels like overkill at first.

My old cordless drill started smoking trying to mix a five gallon bucket. Upgraded to a corded one and never looked back.

Yeah, "smelled like hot plastic" is exactly what happened to me. I tried mixing a small bucket of joint compound with my cordless and it got so hot I could barely hold the handle. Threw it in the trash that same day and grabbed a corded model. No looking back either. Cordless is great for driving screws and light work, but for anything with real torque, you gotta have a cord. It's just physics.
