Spent $150 on a smart thermostat and it's been a total headache
I thought I was being smart (no pun intended) by getting a Nest knockoff for my old house last month. The installation was a nightmare because my wiring was from the 80s and nothing matched the color codes in the manual. Ended up having to call an electrician who charged me $80 just to tell me I needed a different model. Then the app kept disconnecting from my wifi every few days, so I'd come home to a freezing house. Took me three weeks of resetting the thing before I just gave up and put my old dumb thermostat back on. The whole thing cost me about $230 total with the electrician visit and the unit itself. Has anyone else had bad luck with these smart home devices in older houses?

So you're saying the wifi issues were the bigger problem than the wiring?

Oh, so the wifi was actually the bigger issue? That's almost funny. I bought a "smart" coffee maker once and it spent more time arguing with my router than making coffee. @drew690 would probably get a kick out of hearing how I finally gave up and used a 10-foot ethernet cable to the thing, which kind of defeated the whole "smart" purpose.
