Why does nobody talk about the mess after a ceiling fan swap?

Last weekend I was putting up a new fan in my bedroom, the old one was rattling for months. My buddy came over to help hold the ladder and he kept saying I was taking too long with the wiring, like it was a race or something. I told him I'd rather be careful than have the thing crash down at 3am, but he just rolled his eyes. Do you guys take your time with electrical stuff or do you rush through it like my friend thinks I should?

Good on you for taking your time. My buddy helped me swap out a ceiling fan a few years back and he was in such a hurry he wired the light kit wrong. Ended up with a dimmer switch that only worked on full blast or nothing, had to take the whole thing down again. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather spend an extra half hour checking the connections than wake up to a fan blade in my lap at 3am.

Haste kills more than just ceiling fan installs. Seen it with people rushing through car repairs, missing a bolt or torquing something wrong, and then wondering why their alternator belt flies off on the highway. Same with cooking, people rush the prep and end up with a burnt mess because they didn't read the recipe all the way through. Taking an extra ten minutes to do it right means you aren't doing it over again the next weekend.

Why's your buddy in such a hurry, is there a fire drill he forgot to mention?
