Drywall anchors: from cheap plastic to pound-in steel after my shelf fell on a cat

I used to trust those little blue plastic anchors for everything, then last March a 20 pound shelf pulled right out of the wall in Columbus and nearly crushed my tabby. Switched to the threaded steel ones that you hammer in, they hold way better and I can actually hang a heavy mirror now. Anyone else got a load-bearing disaster story that forced a change?
