My garbage disposal jammed last Sunday and I ignored all the advice about using a hex wrench
I figured I could just stick a wooden spoon in there and break it loose like my dad always did. Big mistake. The spoon snapped in half and I spent two hours fishing splinters out of the drain with pliers. Turns out the hex wrench slot on the bottom is actually there for a reason. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way or am I just the only one who skipped reading the manual?

Oh come on, you really think a wooden spoon is the worst tool for the job? I've seen guys use screwdrivers, butter knives, even a damn crowbar once. The hex wrench is overrated anyway - half the time it strips out the slot if you apply too much force. Your dad's method worked for him, right? Maybe you just didn't use the right spoon or hit it at the wrong angle. I've cleared jams with a pair of tongs and a prayer, no manual needed. Sometimes the "official" way is just a suggestion from some engineer who never had to deal with a real clog on a Sunday.

Three times I've used a butter knife to unjam that thing and it worked fine every time. That little hex hole on the bottom is useless if your hand doesn't fit right or you're in a weird spot under the sink. I'd rather grab whatever is closest than go dig around for a tool that might not even work.

Ha, I used to be in the "just wing it" camp too but after a similar disaster with a chopstick I actually read the manual. That little hex slot changed my whole outlook on garbage disposals.
