My neighbor's deck fix with a $4 tube of exterior caulk

I was over at my neighbor Dave's place last weekend and noticed his deck railing was wobbling real bad... he was about to spend $200 on new brackets. I grabbed a tube of exterior caulk from my truck and filled in the gaps where the screws had loosened up over the years. Let it dry for a day and now that railing is solid as a rock. Has anyone else used caulk as a cheap fix for loose deck hardware instead of replacing everything?

Did you check if the screws were actually grabbing wood or just pulling through?

Dave's deck is probably 10+ years old with treated lumber that's already started checking and splitting. You really think a layer of caulk on the surface is gonna fix screws that have been slowly pulling out for years? That's like putting a bandaid on a broken leg. The real issue is the wood fibers around those screws are probably shredded or rotted from moisture over time. Even if it feels solid now, one good rain and freeze cycle and that caulk is gonna crack right out. Terry's right - you need to actually pull those screws and see if they're grabbing anything solid underneath. Otherwise Dave's gonna be standing on that railing next summer and it's gonna give way.

Dave probably has dry rot in those joist ends now trapping moisture behind the caulk.
