Bought a $40 caulk gun that wouldn't stop dripping and ruined my baseboards in the kitchen

I figured the fancy trigger lock would fix the mess, but it just made a sticky trail across the whole floor while I was trying to finish the job in under an hour, has anyone else found a caulk gun that actually seals tight mid-job?

Have you noticed how EVERYTHING lately is designed to be "fancy" but fails at the basics? I swear, companies slap a few extra features on a simple tool and charge double, but the core function still sucks. I tried one of those "drip-free" models with the rod and thumb button, and it still oozed caulk like a stuck pig. The real trick I've found is to just buy a cheap metal frame gun and practice releasing the pressure by pulling the rod back a tiny bit. It's annoying that we have to figure out workarounds for something that should just work right.

Slap a few extra features on a simple tool and charge double" - that's exactly it lol. But I think the real issue nobody talks about is the plastic vs metal debate. Those fancy caulk guns with all the bells and whistles are usually made of cheap plastic internals that flex when you put real pressure on them. I actually bought a vintage all metal one from a flea market for like 5 bucks and it works better than anything I've seen at Home Depot in the last decade. The rod threads are way tighter too so it doesn't creep forward when you set it down.

Does that rod trick actually work for long though? I've tried pulling the rod back but it always seems to find a way to drip again a few minutes later. The plastic internals thing makes total sense now that you mention it. I bet the cheap metal ones hold up way better because there's no flex when you squeeze. Maybe we're all overthinking it and the answer really is to just hunt down an old used one from a thrift store or something.
