My method for hanging frames without a level gets side-eye, but it works

In my experience, meticulously using a level for every piece can make a wall feel too uniform. I prefer to adjust by sight, which allows for a more dynamic and personal arrangement. Your mileage may vary, but this approach has served my home well.

You know, I used to be a total level purist, everything had to be perfectly aligned to the bubble. Then I hung a grid of photos that was technically perfect but just felt wrong in the room. My wife pointed out that the ceiling line sloped slightly, so my rigid grid fought with the architecture. Now I start with a level for a general guide, but the final adjustments are always by sight. A wall should look right in its space, not just on a checklist.

Totally get the side-eye, but honestly the eyeball method works better for some walls. Sometimes things need to look right to the eye, not just to the level.

What makes a wall look 'right' to the eye then?
