My neighbor in Austin told me to use a 1/4 inch trowel for my bathroom tile, but it was wrong.

He said it would give better coverage, but after laying a few square feet, the tiles weren't sticking right and I had to pull them all up. I checked online and for my 12x24 inch tiles, you really need a 1/2 inch notch. Has anyone else had a bad trowel size tip that messed up a project?

My uncle in Houston swore by a 3/8 inch trowel for his kitchen backsplash, and I ended up with the same mess. I mean, the tiles just wobbled and popped off after a day. I had to scrape off all that thin set and start over, it was such a waste of a weekend. Now I just look up the manufacturer specs online before I even buy the mortar.

Makes sense, that's a huge tile. The bigger the tile, the deeper the notch you need to get enough mortar underneath it.

Yeah, and that's why those huge tiles can be such a pain to lay flat, right?
