My neighbor's 1980s kitchen looked like a time capsule until last month

They had those dark wood cabinets and a yellow laminate counter that was peeling up at the sink. The whole thing felt closed in. Over about three weekends, they painted the cabinets a light grey and installed a new quartz countertop themselves. They also took out a small wall between the kitchen and dining room, which made the biggest difference. Now the whole space feels twice as big and bright. Has anyone else tackled a project that opened up a room like that?

Our last house had that same closed-in feeling with a wall between the kitchen and living room. Taking it down was the best decision we made.

That wall removal is such a game changer. It's wild how a single wall can make a whole floor plan feel chopped up. We did something similar by swapping a solid door for a big sliding barn door between our living room and a sunroom we never used. It's not even a full wall gone, but just seeing that whole other space changes how you live in it. You end up using rooms you used to just walk past.

But sometimes those walls give you quiet and privacy you really need.
