That day I cut a hole in my ceiling for a new vent and found a family of raccoons living up there

Spent four hours patching drywall, laying new insulation, and calling animal control all because I ignored the scratching noises for two months thinking it was just the pipes settling.

The real trick is figuring out if they were there before or after you installed the vent. If they got in through the new hole, you basically handed them a door. If they were already living off the old setup, then the vent was just their Airbnb getting a renovation.

Probably overthinking it, walls have mice regardless of what you do.

Exactly, it's like how people think a new coat of paint fixes a leaky roof. You patch one thing and ignore the bigger problem that's been there the whole time. Same with mice in the walls - they're just part of the deal when you live in an older house, new vent or not. It's the same pattern with so many things, we focus on the fresh change and miss the old issues still hanging around.
