Caulked my own bathtub last month. Saved $150.

Had a gap growing behind the tub in my rental. Water was getting in. Called a pro, he quoted $200. Nope. Watched a 5 minute video instead. Bought a $6 tube of silicone and a $2 tool. Took me 45 minutes. Looks decent. Not perfect but no more water damage. Anyone else do their own bathroom fixes and regret it later?

Oh yeah, that 'looks decent' part is the key. I did my kitchen sink drain a couple years ago, thought I was a hero. Six months later it started leaking again and the cabinet underneath was all warped. Turned out I didn't clean the pipe properly before the sealant went on. Now I double check everything with a flashlight like a maniac.

Man that sucks, @jennysullivan. I did the same thing with a toilet wax ring last year, thought I had it down perfect. Three months later I found water stains on the ceiling downstairs. Now I take pictures before and during every repair so I can go back and check if something goes wrong. It's amazing how one little step can mess everything up.

Wait, shouldn't you use plumber's putty or a gasket instead of sealant on a sink drain?
