I finally heard someone say home server racks don't need active cooling if you keep the room under 80°F

Walked past a guy at Micro Center last weekend telling his friend that and I wanted to ask him how many drives he's toasted trying that theory, has anyone here actually run a rack without fans for more than a year?

You got a buddy Tim? He ran a 24-bay Supermicro bare in his garage for like 14 months. Thought the 80 degree rule was a myth until his array started throwing read errors left and right lol. Changed out four drives before he just gave up and bought a Noctua setup.

Saw a thread on ServeTheHome where a guy tested drive temps with a FLIR camera and said anything over 75 starts causing cumulative damage. Makes you wonder how many used drives are toast before they even hit eBay.

@uma685 that 75c threshold is more about the controller chip than the platters, most people miss that.
