Pro tip: Don't waste $80 on fancy rack rails like I did

I spent $80 on those adjustable rack rails from a popular brand for my home server setup. They promised easy mounting but the holes didn't line up with my 12U open frame rack at all. I spent two hours trying to make them work before giving up. Turns out I could have bought cheap L-brackets from the hardware store for $12 and been done in 10 minutes. The return shipping was $15 so I basically threw away $95 total. Anyone else have a rack accessory that sounded great but was totally useless?

Did you torque the screws down all the way? Most of those adjustable rails need some pressure to align properly, and your 12U rack might need a tiny bit of adjustment itself.

I mean, is it possible you just got a bad batch or something? I've used those adjustable rails in a few builds and they lined up fine, maybe your 12U rack is slightly off-spec?

Oh @henry604, I bet my torque setting was just 'slam it in frustration' by the end there. At least you saved yourself $95 worth of regret, I just call that my tuition for hardware school.

Did you check if they were compatible with your rack brand before buying?
