I used to think running the cutter head at full tilt was the only way to clear a channel fast.

Watching a guy in Tampa work half my speed but move twice the material because he pulsed the hydraulics made me feel like a rookie. Anyone have a good rule of thumb for finding that sweet spot in different bottom types?

That pulse method is a game changer for sticky mud. It lets the spoil actually clear the cutter instead of just churning it into soup. Honestly, watching the discharge pipe tells you more than the engine gauge sometimes. If it's flowing thick and steady, you're winning.

My old foreman swore by the discharge pipe too.

Gauge lies, but the pipe never does.
