My old boss in Mobile said to always run the cutter head at full tilt in soft mud, but it just made a cloud.

I did that for a whole season on a channel job, and we lost a day of work because the survey boat couldn't see a thing through the silt. Switched to a slower, steady feed and the clarity improved enough to keep working. What's your go-to speed for that kind of bottom material?

Remember my old foreman swore by that method too.

Check the tide tables first.

Oh man, that's the real key right there. My buddy ignored the tide chart once and his truck got stuck for hours. It's not just about water depth, the current gets crazy strong on a big tide swing. That extra five minutes of planning saves a whole lot of trouble later.
