I always thought pliers were fine for stripping Romex. Seeing that reaction from a pro makes me question my whole method now. What's the actual right tool for the job?

Wait, you've been using regular pliers this whole time? That's a great way to nick the copper and cause a weak spot. You really need a proper wire stripper for that job.
