Just dropped $80 on a 'microscope' that turned out to be a glorified magnifying glass

I was trying to fix a tiny surface mount resistor on a phone board last week. My eyes were killing me, so I ordered this 'digital microscope' online for about eighty bucks. It showed up, and the picture was so blurry I couldn't even tell a capacitor from a crumb. The stand was flimsy plastic and kept tipping over. I ended up using my old ten dollar loupe to finish the job. Has anyone found a decent, actually affordable scope for close-up board work?

My experience was the total opposite. I grabbed a cheap digital scope from a surplus store, maybe forty bucks, and it's been solid for basic board inspection. The trick was getting a separate ring light for even lighting, which cleared up the blurriness a lot. It's not lab grade, but for spotting bridges and checking solder joints, it gets the job done without breaking the bank.

Seriously? That sounds like a total headache waiting to happen. A blurry cheap scope with extra lights you had to buy is just a broken tool with extra steps. You'll miss tiny cracks or hairline solder issues that a decent used optical scope would show instantly. Saving money up front costs you way more time and frustration fixing mistakes you didn't see.
