Showerthought: That $80 hot air station I bought off Amazon was a total game changer

I was fixing a busted HDMI port on a laptop board last week. My old soldering iron just couldn't get enough heat into the pads without cooking the whole thing. The hot air station let me set it to 350 degrees and 70% airflow, and the port came right off clean. It took me three tries to get the new one aligned right, but the rework was way easier. I would have had to junk the board without it. Anyone have a favorite brand for replacement tips? The ones it came with are already wearing out.

My first hot air job melted a plastic fan.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. I mean, I've totally been there. What helped me was just going way slower with the heat and keeping the nozzle moving the whole time, like really far away at first. Idk, maybe it's just me but rushing it always ends badly.

Honestly, get some good quality kapton tape for the area around the port. Tbh it's a lifesaver for keeping nearby plastic parts and small chips from getting cooked. I learned that the hard way after I warped a keyboard connector. Go with the real stuff, not the cheap blue tape. Ngl, a little flux paste on the new port pins before you hit it with the air makes the solder flow way better too.
