Overheard a foreman in Dallas say 'just run the new wire next to the old one'

He was talking about a 40 story retrofit and said it would save a week of labor. I think that's a bad practice that just hides problems for the next crew. What's the oldest hack you've had to fix that someone else left behind?

A 40 story building? Running new wire right next to the old is asking for trouble in a space that big. The oldest hack I found was knob and tube spliced with speaker wire inside a wall.

My uncle's old house had that exact knob and tube speaker wire combo, @the_cole. We found it behind a picture of Elvis.

lol @the_patricia finding it behind an Elvis picture is perfect. I had a similar thing at my buddy's old place, we found knob and tube running behind a big mirror in the hallway, and someone had spliced in some old lamp cord for a ceiling fixture. It was all wrapped up in that cloth tape from the 50s, looked like a fire waiting to happen. The whole wall was a mess of old wiring and speaker wire from some ancient intercom system too.
