Hot take: I thought my sister was wasting money on therapy for years

She started seeing someone back in 2018 after her divorce. I figured she just needed time, not a stranger charging $120 an hour to nod along. Then last year I hit a rough patch with my own marriage. She let me sit in on one of her sessions over Zoom and... man, I got it. That therapist asked me one question about why I never told my wife I was scared of losing my job, and it just unlocked something. Has anyone else had a moment where something you were sure was overhyped turned out to be the real deal?

That $120 figure is actually pretty common in my area too, though I've seen it range from $80 to $200 depending on where you live. But @parker_park8, I gotta gently push back on comparing therapy to poodle grooming. I get the joke, but the difference is that therapist had the training to ask a question that cut right to the core of what was going on with me. A groomer is great for knots and mats, but not for the knots in your head. The yoga example is a better comparison actually, because both are about learning to notice what's really happening instead of just reacting. Your mileage may vary on the price, but for me that one session saved me from months of stumbling around on my own.

$120 an hour to nod along"... yeah, that's what my neighbor's cousin charges to groom your poodle too, so at least therapy comes with less fur. But seriously, that unlocked thing you mentioned... I had the same moment when I finally let my buddy drag me to a yoga class. I spent ten years making fun of people chanting in a sweaty room, then one session later I'm crying on my mat because the instructor said "let go of what doesn't serve you." Still won't pay $120 for it though, I'll stick to my $5 yoga podcast and a stubborn backache.

Funny how the stuff you mock hardest ends up being what you needed most.
