I used to think asking for a raise was greedy, but my manager in Austin said 'you're leaving money on the table' after I covered for a role open for 6 months.

I finally asked for a 15% bump last week after realizing my quiet work was just expected, not valued, so has anyone else had to push past that 'don't be greedy' feeling to get paid what they're worth?

I mean, calling it 'greedy' feels off to me. It's a business deal. If you covered a role for half a year, they got a huge discount on that work. Asking to be paid for the job you're actually doing is just basic fairness, not greed.

My old boss called me greedy for asking about a promised raise after nine months.

Yeah that's just a bad boss trying to make you feel bad for their own mess up. I've seen that happen where they promise something to keep you quiet, then act like you're the problem when you ask them to follow through. It's not greedy at all, @webb.dakota, it's holding them to their word. They were banking on you forgetting or being too nice to bring it up. Good on you for asking, even if it didn't work out with that guy.
