My credit card debt hit $8,500 and I finally told my wife
I kept it quiet for almost a year, just paying the minimums from my own account. Seeing that exact number on the statement from Chase last Tuesday made my stomach drop. I sat her down in our kitchen in Austin and just said it. Has anyone else had to come clean about a money secret that got way bigger than they planned?

Man, I had a secret store card that got up to about three grand once... I was just throwing twenty bucks at it each month and watching the interest pile up. What finally worked for us was taking my whole check for two months straight and just killing it. We ate a lot of rice and beans, canceled streaming stuff, the whole deal. It sucked for a bit but that zero balance felt so much better than the lying did.

That part about the zero balance feeling better than the lying really hits home, @terry_wood51. I read an article that said the stress relief from paying off debt is a huge, real mental health boost. It makes those months of rice and beans totally worth it in the end.
