My sister thinks it's weird I know exactly how much my friends make
Last month, my friend Mark in Phoenix told me he got a raise to $82,000 a year, and I was genuinely happy for him. People act like talking about salary is rude, but I think keeping it secret just helps companies pay people less. How are you supposed to know if you're being treated fairly if everyone stays quiet? Has anyone else had a real talk about money with their friends?

Honestly that sounds like a fast way to ruin friendships. Money changes how people see each other, plain and simple. If you know your buddy makes way more, you might start resenting him when he doesn't want to split the check evenly. Or he might feel guilty and stop inviting you out. Some things are private for a reason, and pay is one of them. Keeping it to yourself avoids a whole lot of weirdness and jealousy.

Mark's 82k in Phoenix is a solid data point for anyone in tech sales out there. The Riley has a point about dinner checks getting awkward, but companies love when we treat pay like some big secret. My whole friend group knows each other's numbers and we just adjust where we go for burgers, it's not that deep.
