Tried telling my mom I can't afford her birthday gift this year.
She got really quiet and then said 'we never talk about money' and hung up. Has anyone else's family just shut down when you bring up finances?

Oh man, that's the worst. My dad does the exact same thing, like money talk is some kind of crime. It just makes you feel totally alone when you're struggling, right? Families should be the first place you can be honest.

Honestly that reaction is a huge part of the problem. Keeping money a total secret just makes everything harder. It sets people up to feel ashamed when things are tight. My family used to do that and it took years to break the habit. Talking about it, even when it's awkward, is way healthier in the long run.

Got the same reaction when I mentioned my bank account. Felt like I'd broken some sacred family rule.
