Pro tip: Do NOT try the 'freeze your wet sponge to kill germs' trick I saw online.
I did this last Tuesday with my kitchen sponge, left it in the freezer overnight, and the next morning it was a solid brick that took 45 minutes to thaw before I could even wring it out. My wife walked in and said 'You turned a 2 dollar sponge into a science project.' What's a REAL way to keep those things from getting gross without creating more work?

That "solid brick" part got me... but honestly, how gross are we talking? I just give mine a good squeeze with hot soapy water and let it air dry. It's a sponge, not a surgery tool.

Hot water and soap don't kill the germs, they just move them around. A study from 2017 found fecal bacteria on over 75% of kitchen sponges. Letting it air dry just gives that stuff more time to grow. You really need to microwave a wet sponge for two minutes or run it through the dishwasher to actually sanitize it.

Guess I'll just start cooking everything with @leo612's sponge to kill the germs the tasty way.
