Tried to fix a squeaky floorboard with a bar of soap. It took me 4 hours to clean up the mess.

I saw this hack online and just rubbed a dry bar of Ivory soap into the crack. It worked for maybe 10 minutes, then the soap dust mixed with floor grime and turned into this impossible, slippery paste. Anyone have a REAL fix for an old oak floor that won't make a bigger problem?

So where exactly is the squeak coming from? Under a rug or right in a walkway?
