Showerthought: A client's kid asked me why horseshoes are lucky
I was finishing up on a Percheron mare in Bakersfield when the owner's 6 year old asked me that, and I gave my usual line about old iron being good for protection. The kid just looked at me and said, 'But you take the old ones off, so the luck runs out.' I've been thinking about that all week, honestly. Do you guys ever get those questions that make you stop and think about the job in a new way?

Honestly, that's just a kid overthinking it. The luck is in the work, not the metal.

But what if the metal helps you focus and put in the work?

What if the kid is onto something though? You take off the old shoe to put on a new one, so the luck isn't gone, it's just getting refreshed. Maybe the farrier is the one moving the luck around, not letting it run out.
