Tried making my own hoof packing mix... big mistake

Mixed up some pine tar with crushed aspirin and a little copper sulfate in my garage last week, figured it'd be a game changer. Ended up with a rock-hard mess that smelled like a dentist's office had a fight with a lumber yard. Anyone else ever thought they were being clever DIY-ing hoof stuff and just made a sticky disaster?

Last winter I tried a "homebrew" frog support mix with old duct seal and tea tree oil. Ended up with a goopy mess that stuck to everything except the hoof, and my barn smelled like a chemical spill for three days. Store bought is cheaper in the long run when you factor in the clean up and the new pair of jeans you ruin.

Well congrats, you pretty much invented hoof concrete, hope it wasn't load bearing. I'd say that mix needed some cornstarch or at least a little less enthusiasm with the pine tar. Maybe stick to store bought stuff unless you're trying to start a second career as a farrier chemist.

My buddy tried mixing hoof packing with that cheap silicone caulk from the hardware store once. Said the horse looked at him like he lost his damn mind and the stuff took three days to peel off his hands.
